    WHAT IS HR BOOTCAMP?

    HR Bootcamp is a 4-week, 100% online, human resources training course hosted by the Reno+Sparks Chamber of Commerce and Northern Nevada Human Resources Association (NNHRA).

    Our goal is to equip business owners, organization leaders, and HR professionals with the tools they need to build a better workplace.

    Participants will receive a certificate of completion; SHRM and HRCI recertification credits will be available (credits pending). **Certificate and credits will be issued after successful completion of the entire course. You must attend all four sessions to qualify.

    Program Description

    Session 1 | APRIL 8 | 9-10:30 AM
    Policy: Best practices on Employee Handbooks & HR policy/procedures

    In this session, Deputy Attorney General, Charity Felts, will discuss best practices for employee handbooks.  This will include discussion about creating, distributing, and maintaining an employee handbook. 

    Learning Objectives:

    • How the size of your company will dictate the contents of your handbook
    • Key reasons to have an up-to-date handbook, what types of policies to include
    • Suggestions for organizing your handbook
    • The need for employee acknowledgments

    People: Onboarding, retention, and building culture

    The Critical Key to Your Business Success

    Once the COVID pandemic comes to an end, it is expected by SHRM that there will be a "tsunami" of employee new hires, employee turnover, and major changes in business culture. Join Founder and Chief Education Officer, Amber Barnes, as she reveals how by learning these questions and incorporating processes into your approach to performance management, you’ll be able to help employees win while reducing the stress and frustration that typically happens around expectations and performance.  

    Learning Objectives:  

    • Explore the four questions employees need answered to make a meaningful contribution to your organization. 
    • Practice using a model for setting expectations.  
    • Compare your current performance management practices with current research on human performance. 

    Learning Outcomes:  

    • Improve your effectiveness as well as those you support at setting expectations.  
    • Refine your performance management process to ensure it sets your employees up to win.  
    • Take this information and revamp your employer brand and your employee value proposition.  

     



    Session 4 | APRIL 29 | 9-10:30 AM

    Important changes to HR policy due to COVID-19

    COVID-19 has made business continuity management a way of life. In order to maintain effective and relevant policies, HR must engage stakeholders and management buy-in, as well as draft, implement and train on the policy changes. An effective compliance management program ensures these changes occur timely, and that resulting policies are effective and useful upon implementation.

    Nicole Harvey, Attorney for Blanchard, Krasner & French, will provide guidance on key legal issues including vaccinations, paid leave, attendance, safety, travel, telecommuting, hiring, and group health insurance. We will review new workplace poster requirements and identify government resources. Participants will also receive tactical training on policy drafting and there will be opportunities for Q&A along the way.

    • Create a responsive and effective HR Compliance Program
    • Manage policies in a rapidly changing legal environment
    • Utilize reliable resources for ongoing  policy development

    Charity Felts is a Deputy Attorney General in the Personnel Division of the Nevada Attorney General's Office. She provides advice and counsel to state agencies in all employment-related matters. Before joining the Attorney General's Office, Charity focused on employer-side employment law matters in private practice. She has developed and presented numerous trainings across the state for employers on a variety of employment topics. Charity is a past President of NNHRA.

    Katherine (Kit) Prendergast is the owner of Career Connections of Sierra Nevada (estab. 2000) in Reno, Nevada. She is a PCC credentialed coach with the International Coach Federation (ICF), a Certified Executive & Leadership Development Coach (CELDC) and a Certified Social & Emotional Intelligence Coach (SEI) as well as a Certified Career Management Coach (CCMC).

    Kit is experienced in a variety of career/strength assessments and is a certified Myers Briggs Inventory (MBTI) instructor as well as a licensed provider of the Four Lenses Temperament Discovery. She welcomes coaching and training clients nationally and internationally.

    For practical experience, Amber has held positions as the Sr. Manager of Learning and Performance at Veritas Technologies, Learning and Development Consultant at Wells Fargo, Retail Branch Manager at Wells Fargo, and Director of Operations, HR, Marketing and Print Shop for a chain of funeral homes.  

    Her clients include a diverse group of organizations, including: Fortune 50 companies, startups, higher education, small to mid-sized organizations, nonprofits, government (local, state, federal and tribal) as well as professional associations. Amber is also involved with a series of global programs, including: The Young African Leadership Program, The Brazilian Youth Leadership Program, The Algerian Youth Leadership Program, and the Belarussian Youth Leadership Program.  

    Amber holds a bachelor’s degree in education as well as a masters degree in organizational developmentShe has certifications in the methodologies and programs of Brené Brown, Ken Blanchard, Susan Fowler, and the Conscious Leadership Group.  

    Her community service includes founding the Northern Nevada Chapter of Conscious Capitalism, serving on the advisory board of Social Impact 360, serving as board development chair for Susan G. Komen Northern Nevada as well as volunteering for the Crisis Call Center, Girls on the Run, Junior Achievement, and Hands on Banking.  

    Outside of StartHuman, Amber is an avid outdoor adventurer, rookie gardener, voracious reader, and dog mom to two Labrador retrievers, Guinness and Finn.
