"How Hiring Veterans Wins the War for Talent"

In November of 2018, the SHRM Foundation announced its Integrating & Engaging Veterans in the Workforce initiative with a goal of empowering HR Professionals to attract, hire and retain veterans. HR Professionals report that veteran hiring is a top 3 priority to meet their workforce needs. Based on a study from Syracuse University, 65% of veterans have some college education or higher, making veterans more educated than their civilian peers. Also, 68% of employers reported that veteran employees performed “better than” or “much better” than their civilian peers.

Join Melissa Marsh from HR In Demand, the chair of NNHRA’s Workforce Readiness Committee and Veteran Business Owner, Alex Roodhouse of BeaverFit USA as we dive into the benefits of hiring veterans for your organization and how to maximize the skills they have gained through their military service.

By attending this program, you will learn:

    • What kinds of skills veterans can bring your organization and how to best utilize their skillset
    • Tangible benefits to hiring veterans
    • Resources you can use immediately to jumpstart your own veteran hiring program
    • How to measure the impacts of your initiative
    • Learn about the SHRM Foundation’s partnership with PsychArmor in creating a SHRM “Veteran’s at Work Certificate” (Online courses- available to all SHRM members)
    • Breakout session - “15 Things Veterans Want Employers to Know”

The use of this seal confirms that this activity has met HR Certification Institute’s® (HRCI®) criteria for recertification credit pre-approval of (1) credit each.

    Speaker Introduction

    Alex Roodhouse, Owner
    BeaverFit USA

Alex is an honor graduate from the University of Notre Dame, with more than 15 years of unique private and public sector experience.  In the military, he served as a US Naval Officer in the Riverine Squadrons throughout Anbar province in Iraq, receiving military decorations including the Navy Commendation Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon.  The Riverines were a small and specialized group, and as a founding member of Squadron One, Alex had the unique experience of managing a military "start-up":  articulating the mission, defining the requirements to succeed, creating the capability, and then delivering results.

In the private sector following his military service, Alex was an early member of TRX, where he developed and led two major divisions of the company, leading both the Government business unit and the International sales channel.  Following his time at TRX, Alex co-founded BeaverFit North America in early 2014.  Since that time, BeaverFit has rapidly grown to become the largest global provider of fitness equipment to the US military and all NATO/Western forces, and a large scale provider of innovative operational/tactical equipment.

Alex resides in Lake Tahoe with his wife and their 5 children, where they spend their free hours skiing, mountain-biking and enjoying the beauty of the Lake and mountains.
